We rolled out a little late this morning, after celebrating Robin's birthday, with no real plans. I had been dying to rent scooters and bomb around the island, but Beth was not so keen. Beth also had a minor upset stomach, so to kill time, I took the kids for a walk around town and they made a little iPad mock trailer of "two sisters and their adventure in Vietnam" - pretty cute and well edited (maybe some of Uncle Steve's talents have somehow rubbed off - he just won another editing award, this time for Amazing Race Canada!).
After lunch, we landed on me renting a scooter and taking Robin for a while and then figuring out if Abby wanted to go later. They camped out at a restaurant with a deck of cards, and off we went!
We had a blast! Hearing Robin's voice in my ear as we zoomed around this beautiful island was fantastic. We ended up driving 22km to the north end of the island. The terrain was essentially a land-based Ha Long Bay and it was also great to see the Cat Ba City, beyond the main tourist area, was actually a normal little,Vietnamese City.
When we got back (apparently Beth was not expecting us to have been gone for over 2 hours, d'oh!) Beth was a little concerned and a greatly relieved. Abby was slightly reluctant, but she jumped on and we were back out to the countryside. She started off very cautious but 5 minutes later she was hooting and hollering - we also had a blast.
When we returned, Beth looked very curious and asked if she could go for a ride. She did pretty well then even asked to try the bike out herself. This is her second loop - the first loop was a little more..... Cautious...
So now, Beth was a convert. It was a very fun day! Last night in Cat Ba tonight as we are off to Hanoi tomorrow to catch our first overnight train down to Hoi An!
awesome pictures!
