We liked Cavtat so much, we went back this morning. Sammy’s nap (or lack thereof as it turned out) schedule didn’t let Steve and Kris escape today, but the rest of us headed down the coast again for the morning.
We parked in the same lot as yesterday, walked up the peninsula and got set up on chairs with umbrellas and Beth and I and Brian, Melly and Jordan walked around the peninsula in search of breakfast. They opted for a sit down place, while we went to a supermarket and got some baked goods and yogurt.
After feeding the kids, Robin and I went to check out the nearby parasailing outfit. We’d seen it yesterday and it looked like fun. Twenty minutes later we were on a boat rounding the corner to pick up Beth and Abby. The boat was a special parasailing boat with a huge, flat, rear deck made for easy launching. Our driver was one of five certified parasailing instructors in Europe (he said) so that checked the safety box for Beth. Abby, Robin and I got our harnesses on, clipped into the overhead pole and were soon being lifted from a sitting position on the deck into the air, dragged upwards by the smiley face parachute flying Croatian white and red.
When we got to our maximum height, the feeling was pretty exhilarating. We stared at the sun rays penetrating the aqua blue Adriatic while the shadow of our parachute chased us. I could have done this for a while (the kids asked how long it would take to do this until Toronto... I told them we would have gone broke well before we’d have arrived!) - it was so chill.
To bring us back down, the winch started and the boat slowed. The captain did the obligatory “slow down enough to dip our toes in the water, then speed up again to lift us into the air” gag and we were soon arriving gently back in a seated position on the launch deck... pretty cool operation. So cool, that Beth opted to go by herself right after! She’s come a long way since the Osaka Ferris wheel incident!!
We lounged and swam back at the rocky “beach” area. Brian et al headed out to go home for lunch - getting proper naps for the kids and Steve (lol) today was critical as they have a 6am flight and 7 hour layover tomorrow to get back to a Toronto. Yikes! Robin and I borrowed their swimming shoes which came in handy... the entrances to the beautiful water are often very uncomfortable, and this one, like many, had sea urchins all over the place. I came out and gave Abby a piggy back to get in to the water as she didn’t have shoes. Once in though, the water is spectacular.
Papa and Blair surprised us by opting to parasail as well. Beth and Robin bore, witness aboard the boat.
We had a very late lunch at the same place as yesterday and headed back to the oasis for swimming, napping and relaxing. We caught most of the lame third place game between Belgium and England, and luckily Cycling and Beer beat out Royals and.... Big Ben (?).
The four of us struck out trying to go to Azur for dinner, a well recommended place that featured local food with an Asian twist, so we ended up going to a more generic place and had a pretty bad meal. We all ordered the beef cheeks bourguignon, recalling Papas meal at the best place in Split, but it was mediocre at best. In a first that I could remember, without complaining, they comped us two of our meals and the water we had ordered as they’d sensed, based on our leftovers, that we were not overly impressed. I have to say, the service in Croatia (and Slovenia for that matter) has been consistently fantastic.
Back at the oasis, the young ones were in bed, so the rest of us sat up chatting for awhile before saying our goodbyes. Our flight and Papa and Blair’s flights are tomorrow afternoon, so we will get a few more hours of sleep.
Our time here is almost over. I’m going to think of some summary things here tomorrow, but for now, good night!
