Day 14: Chilling in the Elaphiti Islands

Today was a chill day.   One of the things to do in Dubrovnik is hire a boat to check out some of the nearby islands.   I’d arranged a boat with a company I’d found on trip advisor and the skipper met us at 9am at the old city harbour.

Brian, Melly and Jordan joined us on the speedboat, captained by Ivan.   We were off to explore some of the Elaphiti Islands, a series of pretty small islands just north of Dubrovnik.    Really, it was just an excuse for a change of scenery and some swimming.

The first stop was Koločep.   Ivan said the Adriatic was rougher than usual, so we were going to stay in the land side of the islands.   We stopped the boat in a cove that had a nice sandy bottom and jumped out for a short swim.   Jordan was so cute... Melly said she’d been acting weird this morning due to the babysitter keeping her up the night before, but if that was weird, we’ll take it!

The water seemed pretty chilly, but fine once you got in.  We didn’t last too long before we were speeding off to our next stop, Lopud.   This was a more developed island (though, with a population of just 200 with over churches on the island, it’s clear that it had been declining for hundreds of years) with a pier, sandy beaches and a number of restaurants and walk around the half moon bay.   These islands used to be decently populated hundreds of years ago, providing ship building services and agriculture for Dubrovnik, but now they are just for tourists and the occasional fat cat expat that likes building glass houses on remote islands.

We got set up on the beach and watched Jordan do a Family Circus trail all around the beach.   Brian and I strolled to the end of the strip, checking out a botanical garden, but for the most part this place was a tourist strip.

By noon, we were ready for lunch.   We ate at a mediocre place by the water, and watched Jordan perform some punch drunk maneuvers... she was clearly exhausted but it didn’t manifest in a meltdown, rather, cute.... craziness.

We headed back o the boat and sped back.   When we got to the open waters near the city, Ivan had to slow right down.   The swells got pretty big and it wasn’t safe to go too fast.   Jordan sat on Beth’s lap and she was singing something in her ear that had Jordan quiet, though occasionally whispering “a-gain?!”.  Seeing her with Jordan filled me with a little nostalgia for when our girls were that small.

We spent the rest of the day napping off the up-downs of the boat, chilling in the pool and watching the end of stage 6 of the tour on Italian TV (oh... that was just me).  Half of us picked up Indian for dinner at home, while the other half went to dinner in the old city.

Two more days here and we don’t have anything in particular that we want to accomplish.  I’m sure we’ll find something to amuse us!
