It was another chill day today. Beth, Abby and Blair walked the wall early while the rest of us lounged around the house, being entertained by Sam and Jordan.
I suggested we do lunch in Cavtat (sav-tat) which is a short drive South Oro Dubrovnik. The little town is beautiful. Once you leave the picturesque main road high above the Adriatic, you weave down to a little peninsula that has a little seaside presence on each side. We parked in the big main parking lot and Brian, Melly, Jordan and Robin (happy to tag along with a new family, lol) where right behind us.
We strolled the little port on the South side which felt like a place where the rich and famous parked their “little” boats: giant sailboats and large yachts. The pedestrian only road was lined with cute restaurants with and old church and buildings built on the hillside just behind and in the middle of the peninsula.
We had a nice lunch with the Taylors, then they headed back (with Robin) while Abby, Beth and I continued our walk around the peninsula, taking the long way back to the car. Abby kept pining to go swimming (she was the only one who had brought her bathing suit) as we stared into the clear, calm waters thirty feet below the road that were dotted with the occasional swimmer and sunbather.
Finally, Abby won and we headed down one of the stairways that led to a rocky bay where a dozen people were swimming. Abby stripped down and slipped into the water which looked really refreshing! When she was done and we rounded the bend near the parking lot and saw a little rocky beach set up with massage, parasailing, ice cream, a restaurant and lots of potential shade, we vowed to come back tomorrow with the gang in tow.
The girls had volunteered to babysit tonight, so we had a really nice adult dinner in the old city at a Rick Steve’s recommendation on the alley parallel to the Stradum on the land side. That alley is really cool during the day, but at night it turns into an even nicer setting. In fact, the entire old city transforms into a relaxed aquarium for people watching. The brutal hot sun is gone, the frenetic tour groups are gone, the desperation of people short on time and trying to soak it all in in 8 hours is gone - it’s all replaced by small groups, couples and families, slowly strolling along the Stradum, enjoying the lit up boulevard and surrounding alleyways, looking for a place to eat or enjoying a post meal ice cream (the national sport here).
Fan-tastic.
